Raising a child is a journey filled with hope, love and countless decisions. The journey can feel even more nuanced for parents who suspect their child may have a disability.

One of the most critical components is how you approach the early stages of your child’s education. Understanding your rights, the law and the right actions to take can make a world of difference in helping to ensure your child gets the support they need

Know the signs and trust your instincts

Parents are often the first to notice signs that their child might be struggling. Maybe your child:

  • Isn’t meeting developmental milestones
  • Has communication or behavioral challenges
  • Is falling behind in school

Documenting observations at home and asking teachers for input can provide a clearer picture. These records can be valuable when requesting formal evaluations or accommodations.

Understand your legal rights

You should look into laws that give your child the right to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) tailored to their individual needs. As a parent whose child might have a disability, you should not hesitate to request an evaluation from the public school district. The school is then required to respond in a timely manner, helping to ensure your child is not left without needed support.

Seek evaluations and ask questions

Once your request is made, the school will determine whether evaluations are appropriate. If approved, you should expect your child to receive assistance in all areas related to the suspected disability. This may include psychological, academic, behavioral or speech and language evaluations.

During this stage, don’t hesitate to ask questions. You have the right to be involved in every step, to help ensure the process remains transparent and focused on your child’s needs.

The process of identifying and supporting a child with a disability can be overwhelming, but you are not alone. Starting early, enlist compassionate legal support and staying involved at every step helps to ensure your child begins their educational journey with the right foundation.
